How the Tax File Number (TFN) Works — and How to Get One

Your TFN is the first thing to organise after arriving. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how to apply online.

What is a TFN?

A Tax File Number is your personal reference number in Australia's tax system. Without one, tax is withheld at the highest rate.

How to apply

Apply free online through the Australian Taxation Office after you arrive. You'll need your passport and an Australian address.

Keep it private

Only share your TFN with the ATO, your employer (after starting work), your bank, and your super fund.
